Wrapped in Love: The Heartwarming Story of Meeko, the Adopted ‘Purrito’ Kitten

Meeko’s all grown up but remains the household superstar!

Back in 2015, Best Friends launched their “purrito” campaign, showcasing the irresistible cuteness of kittens bundled up like tiny burritos.

This technique does more than just melt hearts—it also helps kittens stay calm and makes bottle-feeding easier. The campaign also shone a light on kitten season in spring, a crucial time when many orphaned kittens flood animal shelters in need of care, fostering, and adoption.

Meeko, the middle kitten from that famous photo, is now 8 years old and considers himself quite the celeb at home.

His adopters, Manny Santiago and Páll Ívarsson, didn’t pick him for his star status; they simply fell for his charm upon moving to Los Angeles, only to discover his face was all over billboards and public spaces later.

Manny finds it amusing to have a pet who’s a local celebrity of sorts. “Seeing the ‘purrito’ images around Los Angeles on billboards and buses is always a thrill,” Manny shares. “We love telling Meeko about his sightings whenever we come back home.”

Meeko, the spirited tabby living with his 17-year-old feline sibling, definitely knows how to steal the spotlight. “He’s not shy about asking for cuddles and attention throughout the day. He’s even got a habit of snuggling on my shoulder during my Zoom meetings,” Manny shares with a laugh.

Meeko always makes sure he’s the first to warmly welcome any visitors. He continues to be a shining example for adoption.

Manny enthusiastically advises, “Adopting or fostering is one of the best actions you can take. The amount of love and gratitude you get in return is unbelievable. Our lives without our two adopted furballs? Can’t even picture it. They’re our endless source of happiness.”
