Applaws Cat Food Reviews – Is It Any Good?

If you are considering getting some Applaws wet cat food or Applaws dry cat food for your feline friend, it goes without saying that you should do as much research as possible before you change your pet’s diet. In this post, we’ll look at some of the important information that you should know about this brand and we’ll also put together some Applaws cat food reviews, especially based on the consumer reports that the varieties have gathered.

Applaws Cat Food Reviews

I have personally recommended Applaws before while I was working as a vet. I would argue that it’s a better brand than many others, but there are some areas where it could be improved. It is more species-appropriate than some other brands, but it contains some ingredients that could be replaced with better ones — such as rice, for example.

Without further ado, here are some options that you should consider if you’re thinking of trying out this brand for your feline buddy.

1. Applaws Mousse Wet Cat Food Grain-Free Review

One area where this cat food really shines is the limited ingredient one. The best thing about this option is that it doesn’t contain any artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors, which means that it’s perfectly safe and healthy for your feline companion.

What’s also worth noting about it is that it’s grain-free. Grains aren’t required in a cat’s diet as cats are obligate carnivores. The mousse consistency of this recipe makes it highly palatable even for fussy cats.

From what we have noticed, this choice is available in two main recipes — chicken with carrot and tuna with sardine. I would recommend trying out the chicken one first as fish such as tuna are known for being potentially contaminated with heavy metals and other things that can be found in ocean water.

Pros

  • Very palatable
  • The mousse form appeals to many cats
  • Doesn’t contain any artificial flavors, colors & preservatives
  • Grain-free and safe for most cats

Cons

  • It’s not the cheapest option in the world
  • It uses bean gum, seaweed, or carrageenan for the gravy or gelee — one cat parent noted that it could’ve had gelatin instead and I completely agree with this, since gelatin is species-appropriate.

2. Applaws Grain Free Additive Free Cat Food Review

This is a great package for those cat owners who don’t want to risk getting too much of a new wet cat food and realize that their feline friend doesn’t actually like it at all. The bundle comes with as many as five different flavors, 2.47 ounces each.

All of the varieties are grain-free and additive-free. The bundle includes two pouches of chicken breast with pumpkin, two tuna with prawn, two tuna with anchovies, and two tuna with sea bream.

While this type of food is definitely palatable and is likely to be appreciated even by fussy cats, I would argue that so many fish varieties in a bundle is a little weird. As I already mentioned, tuna and ocean fish, in general, is not the healthiest food source because it can contain heavy metals.

Other than that, this option is rich in essential amino acids and high in taurine, which is definitely a pro. Most cats seem to love the taste of the recipes, but this isn’t a food per se, so it should be offered only on occasion.

Pros

  • Wide variety
  • Very palatable
  • Grain-free and additive-free

Cons

  • This is just a topper, so it shouldn’t be used as the main food source for a cat

This is the exact variety that I used to recommend to customers when I was a veterinarian. There are four recipes to choose from — tuna fillet, ocean fish in broth, tuna fillet with seafood, and chicken breast in broth.

What really makes the difference between this choice and some of the others that we have come across is that the consistency of this cat food makes it look… real.

That might be a weird explanation, but the fact of the matter that when you open up a can, for example, you can actually see the chicken breast in its beauty and glory. And that’s what cats need, since they’re obligate carnivores!

Like with some of the other varieties manufactured by this brand, this one doesn’t contain any preservatives, flavorings, or strange vitamin packs. No artificial colors were used in the development of the recipes, either, which is something you’ll see when you open up a tin.

Pros

  • Contains no artificial flavors and colors
  • Made with high-quality ingredients
  • Very palatable
  • Grain-free

Cons

  • This isn’t a complete food, and the quantity is not enough
  • The cost can be quite restrictive

As you might have noticed, one of the Applaws cat food problems that I have noted in this article is the fact that it can be quite expensive. However, for a healthy development, you should know that you ought to offer your feline friend only the best. If a cat is fed poor-quality food when she’s a kitten, she has a high likelihood of having health issues later on.

So, if you’re in the market for some good Applaws canned cat food for kittens, this one should be right up your alley. It’s high in protein, it contains all-natural ingredients, and it doesn’t have anything that might affect a kitten’s health or safety.

This one is the chicken recipe (chicken breast in broth), but there are other varieties. I would recommend against feeding a young cat fish varieties for the reasons that I have mentioned before.

While the quality of the food is definitely worth writing home about, you might have to add something else to the kitten’s diet so as to make it complete — a dry kitten food variety, maybe, or another grain-free canned food variety.

5. Applaws Ocean Fish With Salmon Grain Free Dry Cat Food Review

If you’ve been thinking of changing your cat’s dry food and you want to try one by Applaws, feel free to consider this one. It comes in a bag that weighs 4 lbs and it’s not as expensive as some of the other varieties made by the same company. This recipe is made with ocean fish and salmon, so your feline companion would have to be a fish lover.

Like with other recipes made by Applaws, this one doesn’t contain any hidden colors, flavors, or preservatives, which definitely gives you a reassurance that your cat isn’t going to suffer any digestive distress or be exposed to any carcinogens.

Most of those that were kind enough to express their views on this recipe say that it seems to be feline approved. It has been tested by some cats that were already being fed the wet varieties and they have also approved it. Other cat guardians note that it is fresh and sounds very crunchy when the cats nibble on it.

It also doesn’t seem to make cats throw up, which is an undeniable bonus.

This is the same thing as the product that we have just showcased, just that the primary ingredient in this recipe is chicken instead of fish. Therefore, it addresses the needs of cats that aren’t great amateurs of fish. Plus, chicken is always the safest option of the two since the likelihood of it containing heavy metals is close to zero.

The best thing about this choice is that it doesn’t contain any grains or potatoes, which means that the cat isn’t going to have an upset tummy after eating this kibble. Grains and potatoes aren’t a part of a cat’s diet anyway, so they’re best left out of any cat food recipe.

The food is enriched with taurine, vitamin E, zinc, and a variety of other minerals and vitamins. It contains a limited number of ingredients – chicken, chicken meal, chickpeas, lentils, flaxseed, and peas. Naturally, the legumes shouldn’t be in the recipe, either, but I will admit that they are better than any grains.

As it was expected, this one is, of course, highly recommended for picky eaters. The simple and natural ingredients recommend it for any type of feline friend, and there have been reports from cat guardians who say that they have started feeding it to cats suffering from IBS and it has produced no digestive issues whatsoever.

Before we move on to the last product on our list, I’d like to underline that cats aren’t really supposed to eat a lot of dry cat food. It should only be used for when you aren’t at home. Ideally, a cat should eat only canned food because cats aren’t particularly keen on drinking a lot of water, which can be very bad for their health.

I have actually tried this for my feline friend in the past and she has loved them! Well, pretty much any cat will since the treats are so lickable and palatable, so the chance of your own feline companion saying a hard ‘no’ to these is rather slim.

The treat is healthy, especially when compared to some of the others I have found available for sale. As usual, this one doesn’t contain any grains, either, and it is made with natural ingredients.

It’s kind of nice that you can feed your feline buddy out of your hand with this type of treat — although I’d still recommend pouring it into a flat food bowl. I did hand-feed my cat one of these and it was in the bed, and needless to say, some of the drops ended up on my bed covers.

Many of the reviews seem to agree with the experience that my cat had, but some do note that they would have liked these to be a little cheaper. Just one consumer report noted that the cat didn’t want to eat the treats, but as you probably know by now, cats have personal preferences just like humans, so that might happen once in a while.

Where is Applaws cat food made?

All of the dry varieties are manufactured in the U.S. whereas the wet ones are made in Thailand. Fortunately, all suppliers are required to be members of one of these organizations:

  • Marine Stewardship Council
  • Thai Tuna Industry Association
  • International Seafood Sustainability Foundation
  • Earth Island Institute

To date, there hasn’t been any Applaws cat food recall — at least we didn’t come across any while doing our research. Note: if you do come across one, please leave a comment and we will update this part of the article! It’s important for us to have posts that are up-to-date and that can do a good job of informing pet owners.

Is it any good?

As you might have noticed from the reviews, Applaws cat food tends to be made of a limited number of ingredients. There are just a few varieties available for sale, and in terms of dry cat food, that’s even truer. The wet recipes are quite simple and they don’t contain any artificial ingredients, additives, preservatives, and all that nasty stuff.

The same goes for the dry food, but unlike the wet alternative, it’s usually fortified with vitamins and minerals.

The bad part is that this cat food isn’t budget-friendly, which means that it’s mostly for people who can afford it. I recommend making your own cat food at home if you can and if your cat doesn’t refuse it. You can then batch freeze it and unfreeze it when you need it. You can get some Applaws cat food for when you aren’t feeling up to the task.

I’m including (I did in another post, too) a recipe on how you can make your own cat food at home.

In conclusion, Applaws cat food is better and generally safer than many other brands, so you should consider trying it out. Due to its cost, though, you should try a mix of Applaws dry and wet food for cats and some homemade cat food.
