Solid Gold Cat Food Review – Is it worth it?

Is Solid Gold a good cat food? That’s the question that we will try to answer in this article. This brand has been involved in some controversies over time and it has even had to deal with a Solid Gold cat food lawsuit.

We’ll start with some reviews of Solid Gold cat food that seems to be high-quality and quite appreciated by most pet parents out there.

Things have changed in the past years and the ingredients and quality control have become a lot better, but some people might still feel a little wary about trying this brand. There’s no need to worry, though, as it has passed a lot of tests and has been named a quite safe alternative for cats nowadays.

This is another option that you might want to consider, especially if you’re looking for good indoor Solid Gold cat food. It’s both holistic and gluten-free, so it definitely speaks to the needs of cats that might have had digestive issues in the past. Even though it’s marketed for adults, geriatric cats, and also kittens, we’d like to note that this isn’t specifically Solid Gold cat food for kittens.

Young cats need a different recipe compared to adult ones, so do keep that in mind. What seems to be quite appealing about this choice is its pate form. It looks and feels like mousse, which makes it the perfect option for a cat who hates nibbling on chunky bits of meat.

The food is made with chicken liver and goat milk, and while I have talked about how cats are lactose intolerant once they are weaned, goat milk doesn’t cause digestive problems. It’s probably the only one that doesn’t.

The food also has no wheat, soy, or corn, and it also doesn’t contain any artificial preservatives.

Pros

  • Palatable even for really fussy cats
  • Very nutritional. Contains real meat-based ingredients instead of meat by-products
  • Contains plenty of vitamins and minerals — from vitamin B12 to vitamin D3, zinc, and calcium

Cons

  • As is the case with any other cat food, whether made by this brand or not, this one could have done without certain ingredients, such as tapioca starch, potato, or guar gum.

Based on many Solid Gold holistic cat food reviews that we have analyzed, this is another option that you might want to consider. It’s also grain-free and made with safe ingredients, and it’s made for cats of all ages, but we’d mostly recommend it for adults.

What’s interesting about this recipe is the coconut oil. Sure, it might not be the best choice for cats that tend to put on weight easily, but it does make a good alternative for those that have recently lost weight and are recovering from disease, for example. Coconut oil has been found to support skin and coat health, and it’s also hypo-allergenic.

Like other foods that we have showcased here, this one is made with real chicken meat. It’s easily digestible and a great source of lean protein, and it doesn’t contain as many nasty ingredients as some of its competitors do.

Similarly to the tuna cat food in this selection, this one has fibers from sources such as pumpkin, carrots, and spinach. So it’s safe for cats that should be fed no grain, corn, wheat or soy.

Pros

  • Does not contain any artificial colors or preservatives
  • BPA-free and carrageenan-free
  • Made with real meat instead of ‘by-products’
  • Seems to be quite palatable for cats based on the consumer ratings

Cons

  • Contains thickeners like tapioca starch

This meat-based recipe seems to be quite popular with most pet guardians, and that’s because it’s really not rich in fruits, vegetables, or any other ingredients that cats can really do without.

While the food has tuna as its first ingredient, there have been some ingredients added to it. For example, it contains both sunflower oil and canola oil, but also tapioca starch. Fortunately, it does not contain any grains whatsoever, and the fiber sources in this recipe are represented by spinach, pumpkin, as well as carrots.

One thing we like about this product is that it is enriched with amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. On the other hand, one thing we don’t appreciate is that it is thickened with xanthan gum.

This product makes a good choice if you’re in the market looking for wet Solid Gold cat food for a feline friend that has digestive problems caused by grains. If you’re wondering about the Solid Gold cat food calories in this variety, we’ll tell you that it has about 161 calories in every 6-ounce can and approximately 27 calories per ounce.

Pros

  • Doesn’t contain any artificial flavors, preservatives or colors
  • Made from real meat rather than ‘meat by-products’
  • Low carb content
  • Grain-free

Cons

  • As is the case with any other food that is made from fish, this product doesn’t make the best option if you’re looking for Solid Gold cat food for seniors. Fish can contain heavy metals or other potentially dangerous substances on account of ocean pollution.

I am not a fan of dry cat food in any way and I would never recommend it over canned food. Cats don’t tend to drink enough water, and adding dry food to their diet effectively makes it harder to compensate for the lack of water intake. However, if you tend to be away from home for several hours every day, you might have to use dry cat food.

The Solid Gold cat food ingredients in this recipe recommend it. It is natural and grain-free, and it doesn’t contain any typical allergens such as wheat, corn, or soy. Moreover, it is enriched with omega fatty acids and it contains no artificial colors or preservatives.

If you have been trying to find the perfect grain-free Solid Gold cat food for sensitive stomach, this one would definitely make a reasonable option. It even contains prebiotics and probiotics, so it sustains any cat’s digestion.

The main ingredient in the recipe is real quail, so it’s great for cats that do well when being introduced to new and exotic proteins. As for the fiber in the recipe, it comes from pumpkin, which has been found to be highly digestible.

Pros

  • Grain and gluten-free
  • Made with real quail rather than meat by-products
  • Perfect for cats with sensitive stomachs
  • Fiber comes from pumpkin

Cons

  • Every cup has 385 calories, which means that this product might not make the best choice for cats with weight problems.

If you are the pet parent of a cat who has been having urinary tract problems, it might be a good idea to get a supplement that you can add to his or her diet. This one contains blueberries and cranberries, which are both a natural source of vitamin C and antioxidants that protect the urinary tract.

Maintaining your feline companion’s urine pH at a normal level is highly important when it comes to preventing the formation of crystals. Apparently, this is precisely what this supplement has been designed to do.

Ideally, you should add this powder to the food and use a test strip to test your cat’s urine pH on a daily basis so as to see how things are progressing. I’d like to finally add that feeding your cat a dry cat food diet is definitely not a good idea if she has any urinary problems whatsoever.

About Solid Gold

This brand was created by a Great Dane handler back in the 1970s. It was one of the first pet food manufacturers to use the holistic label. The company is based in Missouri, so it is American, although it initially started with headquarters in both the United States and Germany.

Recalls

In case you didn’t know, most pet food brands have had some, if not all of their products recalled at one point in their existence. This happens either because there can be glitches in the manufacturing process or because the ingredients might not be controlled properly.

Solid Gold was recalled in 2012 when the company discovered a salmonella case in their South Carolina facility. In 2018, the Solid Gold cat food complaints from pet parents ended up in a lawsuit because the brand apparently didn’t disclose that the food had heavy metals, chemicals, or toxins.

However, these ingredients were below the maximum tolerable limits that have been established by the FDA. Generally, these contaminants are more likely to be present in fish varieties, so we’d recommend against opting for those. Try to stay away from them especially if you intend to get some good Solid Gold cat food for kittens.

Final note

While the wet food made by this brand is made in Thailand, all of the dry food is manufactured in the United States. To date, the brand refuses to use any ingredients sourced from China. The venison comes from Australia, the pollock from Alaska, and the duck from France. The majority of the other ingredients are sourced locally, in the United States.

What sets this brand aside from the rest is its resolution to use holistic ingredients and avoid the use of grains. Some of the common ingredients that you might find in one of the brand’s recipes range from egg protein and pumpkin to cranberry, apples, carrots, lentils, celery, and even broccoli.
